An oxymoron

Mainstream contemporary dance

It does happen. My favourite example at the moment is the ok go film clip for "Here it goes again"

http://boss.streamos.com/qtime/capi001/okgo/
hereitgoesagain/video/hereitgoesagain_v300.mov

and “A Million Ways” Dance
http://boss.streamos.com/qtime/capi001/okgo/
amillionways/video/amillionways_v750.mov

You have to see these.

Im sure you have other examples and would love to see you post them here.

heya dance captain

Unforch I am a contemporary dance philestine, but I am into what this blog is doing and the capacity for debate using this medium.. I am so disappointed I missed Headlock and yr 80's show - outta the loop and busy doing stuff that isn't nearly as exciting as seeing people using their bodies to create good rather than evil..

I wanted you to know I dropped by and will pass this blog on to others - and when I figure out how to post a link to this page on my blog - I promise I will

keep kicking it dance captain

you are making important comment.

hi dance captain,

i'm not so sure that you could describe these film clips as contemporary dance. i think they're very clever - both choreographically and within the context they've been produced (being witty and outstanding marketing), but somehow it feels like undermining the depth of practice and history that exists within contemporary dance. I also don't think this sort of thing is going to get people rushing to see contemporary dance. if anything they're going to make contemporary dance seem dull and uninteresting. i think the album project was bridging the gap in a really effective way - where vocabulary was stretched to encompass mainstream, alternative and elitist idioms.

a little dance

now this would be my example of great contemporary dance. sublime and enchanting. even a little pretentious - but she's living it.

ps. you can make your links active in the post using the following:

Hi Dave

Yeah, I know it is a bit of a long bow to draw, but I disagree about it undermining the depth of practice, I like that their is such a mainstream link...it is something about the guys not being 'dancers' that works for me. I take your point.
The album series was a great bridge, it would be cool to have some of that stuff posted up, so that we can strengthen the bridge.

And you have struck gold with 'a little dance'. This is the real stuff and i love it.

cheers
Luke
